Are your managers looking after their teams’ mental health?

Most managers recognise that it is part of their role to act on mental health concerns at work but many don’t know how to. New data released by Mental Health First Aid England reveals that a third of managers (33%) feel out of their depth supporting their team with mental health concerns, rising to almost half of managers aged under 25 (45%).

This comes at a time when three-quarters of managers are concerned about their team’s mental health due to the cost-of-living crisis. Nearly one in four people with management responsibilities state they are ‘very worried’ about the impact of the squeeze on living standards on employee wellbeing.

Managers play a crucial role in creating working environments that allow people to feel seen, heard and valued. Over a quarter of managers said more support and training from their employer would help them to create a team where everyone feels able to work in a psychologically safe environment. Teams are at their most effective and creative when everybody feels psychologically safe and this means senior managers creating a workplace culture which builds on respect and trust and recognises how to communicate positively and constructively.
