What kind of leadership skills will our Gen Z population display?

Much has been written about Generation Z as employees but as they are starting to emerge as managers and leaders, how does their style differ from Generation X and Millenials? Gen Zs were born between the late 1990s and 2010 and by 2025 are projected to make up 27% of the workforce.

In general terms, they display a strong sense of purpose, often prefering meaningful work which aligns with their values and can make a positive impact on the world. With this sense of purpose comes a leadership style which often inspires and motivates their team, fostering a sense of shared goals. Unsurprisingly, 83% of this age group report that they make a point of keeping up to date with technology which means they are more likely to consider the latest digital solutions to solve complex problems.

In terms of the workplace, Gen Z look for a workplace that encourages collaboration and inclusivity and will therefore recruit a diverse workforce. Research has shown that 31% of Gen Z will choose to work for employers who proactively prioritise diversity and inclusion in their workforce, compared to 11% of Gen X and 13% of Millennials.

Employee engagement is likely to be high with Gen Z managers as they will seek out honest feedback and will value transparency in interaction with their team.  Gen Z employees and managers alike are more likely to be able to quickly embrace change and will often see it as an opportunity for growth and innovation – which means that in their hands, our businesses are likely to be interesting environments.
