UK Disability History Month: Promoting Inclusion in the Workplace
UK Disability History Month (UKDHM), between 20th November and 20th December is an annual campaign that highlights the ongoing fight for equality and human rights for disabled people. It provides a valuable opportunity for employers to reflect on how far society has come, and to consider what more can be done to remove barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create inclusive workplaces.
Across the UK, almost one in five working-age adults identifies as having a disability or long-term health condition. Despite legal protections under the Equality Act 2010, disabled people still face inequalities in employment, progression, and workplace accessibility.
UKDHM encourages employers to:
-
Celebrate the contributions of disabled people within their business.
-
Raise awareness of the social model of disability, recognising that barriers, not impairments, often create disadvantage.
-
· Review policies, processes, and practices to ensure they promote genuine equality of opportunity.
There are many ways for employers to acknowledge and support UK Disability History Month, such as:
-
Hosting awareness sessions or webinars focusing on disability history, accessibility, or inclusive communication.
-
Reviewing workplace policies and procedures to ensure they reflect best practice in reasonable adjustments and accessibility.
-
Encouraging open dialogue by inviting disabled employees or staff networks to share their experiences and ideas for improvement.
-
Highlighting success stories internally and externally to promote inclusion and reduce stigma.
UK Disability History Month is more than an awareness campaign, it’s a reminder that inclusion is an ongoing commitment. By taking proactive steps to review accessibility, provide education, and listen to lived experience, employers can create workplaces where all individuals have equal opportunity to contribute and succeed.
