Nearly half of UK workers report workplace conflict
A recent national survey indicates that workplace tensions are widespread across the UK, with around 44% of employees saying they have been involved in some form of disagreement or dispute over the past year.
Issues related to capability or performance emerged as the most frequent triggers, cited by just over a third of workers. Personal clashes and strained working relationships followed closely behind.
The findings suggest that conflict at work has a significant impact on employee wellbeing.
More than half of respondents reported increased levels of stress, anxiety, or low mood as a result of these situations, and nearly half said their motivation or commitment at work had declined after experiencing conflict.
The survey also highlighted notable disparities between different groups of workers. Employees with disabilities, particularly those whose conditions significantly affect daily life, reported markedly higher levels of conflict than those without disabilities. This points to an ongoing need for more inclusive and supportive working environments.
Workplace size also appeared to influence the likelihood of disputes. Conflict was reported slightly more often in smaller organisations, where formal HR support or established processes might be less available.
Despite the high prevalence of conflict, most workers said disagreements were ultimately resolved through informal discussions, either with their manager or directly with the other person involved. Experts say this demonstrates the importance of early, open conversations before issues escalate.\
Organisations are encouraged to ensure they have clear, accessible procedures in place for addressing conflict, with a focus on resolving matters promptly and constructively. Training for line managers in conflict handling can be particularly valuable.
Senior managers also play a crucial role by modelling respectful behaviour and contributing to a culture where concerns can be raised and addressed safely. Should you wish to discuss training for your managers in managing difficult situations, contact 121 HR Solutions on 0800 9995 121.
