Businesses have concern over serious illnesses and their impact on the workplace
It has been reported that cancer and other serious illnesses are now a major concern for employers, as more people continue working while managing long-term health conditions. A poll found that 56% of employers are worried about serious ill health affecting their workforce, while concerns are also high among employees; particularly older workers.
Despite this growing awareness, employer support remains limited. Further research shows that only 17% of employers plan to prioritise wellbeing support for conditions like cancer this year.
Experts argue that many workplace policies are still built around short-term sickness absence and fail to reflect the fluctuating nature of illnesses such as cancer.
In response, the UK government has announced a new employer partnership aimed at helping 830,000 working-age cancer patients stay in work during and after treatment. The scheme will link employers with charities to share best practice, training and guidance.
Experts stress that effective support requires clear communication, flexible working arrangements, compassionate sick-leave policies, and better training for managers. Beyond formal policies, organisational culture is seen as crucial: employees with serious illnesses need to feel valued, supported and treated with dignity rather than as a problem to manage.
