The cost of short-term absences and changes to Statutory Sick Pay
Recent research has warned that upcoming changes to statutory sick pay (SSP) from April could worsen short-term, frequent employee sickness absence. A survey of UK business owners has found that 37% already see managing high levels of short-term absence as their main challenge.
From April, SSP will be paid from the first day of sickness instead of after three unpaid waiting days, and the lower earnings limit will be removed. This will extend SSP entitlement to around 1.3 million low-paid workers and increase the amount some employees receive.
As a result, more employees will qualify for sick pay, more short absences will be paid, and employer costs and operational pressures are expected to rise. Employers are advised to review and clearly communicate absence management policies to help manage the increased risk of higher absence rates.
