Half of UK managers ill equipped to deal with people related issues!
More than half of organisations say their managers lack the confidence to tackle people related issues, according to a survey of 261 HR professionals.
Two thirds of respondents reported that people issues had escalated because of poor handling or delays. In 43 per cent of organisations, the mishandling of people problems has led to an employment tribunal claim.
Poor policies and processes are also contributing to the increase in employee relations problems. One in three businesses said people issues were addressed informally at their organisation with no consistent process, while 28% admitted that some issues were ignored.
Managers are increasingly expected to handle complex and sensitive people issues without the training to do so effectively. When issues are dealt with informally or not dealt with promptly, they are far more likely to escalate, increasing the risk of formal disputes, legal action and costs.
With the Employment Act set to strengthen the rights of workers, there will be a greater onus on employers to strengthen their people management capability.
