AI-written workplace grievances creating challenges

Businesses are increasingly dealing with workplace grievances and appeals drafted with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).  While the technology can help employees structure their arguments, inaccurate information generated by AI tools is making internal dispute processes more complicated.

Recent research suggests that the vast majority have encountered issues related to employees using AI at work over the past year. Nearly all respondents said they had seen cases where staff relied on AI systems to prepare formal grievances or to challenge disciplinary action or redundancy decisions.

Many report that these AI-generated submissions contain errors. In a large proportion of cases, the complaints included misleading legal interpretations or incorrect references to employment policies. Some submissions were described as containing extensive inaccuracies throughout the document.

One concern is that employees may treat AI-generated responses as reliable without verifying the information. When the material is submitted without proper fact-checking, it can introduce misunderstandings into an already sensitive process.

These tools can create unrealistic expectations for employees pursuing complaints. Because some AI systems provide confident but flawed guidance, individuals may expect outcomes that are not supported by company policies or employment law. When those expectations are not met, it can increase frustration and escalate disputes.

Another issue is the length and volume of AI-produced material. Some complaints now span many pages, with employees using generative tools to produce extensive documents for a single grievance. Employees are also experimenting with legal-style AI tools designed to draft formal correspondence, including letters that resemble professional legal communications.

However, experts warn that these systems may produce convincing language while still misinterpreting employment law or company rules.

As a result, employers must spend more time reviewing and assessing complaints to identify genuine concerns and separate them from incorrect legal claims or exaggerated statements. Smaller organisations may find this particularly difficult due to limited resources.
